Hi, my name is Olga. I am a Russian woman who married a wonderful western man, who at that time lived in New York City. We found each other through an online dating service and got married eight months after we had our first email contact. Sounds a bit odd, right? Well, I thought that my dating story was unique until I learned that a good friend of mine, also a Russian woman,
met an American man through an Internet dating agency who later on became her husband. Now they live in California.
Today more and more men and women seek and find their romantic partners over the Internet. And yet having a romantic relationship over the Internet is still somewhat scary, especially when your partner is on the other side of the globe. Some people, like my husband, think it’s a great adventure. Other people might dismiss it as a too complicated process with only a slim chance to work out. If you think that it is a somewhat crazy concept, you are not alone. Even after four years of a happy marriage, from time to time my thoughts go back to the days when my husband and I found each other, and I think that it was quite a daring journey. I often wonder – “what if everything had gone differently? What if I wouldn’t have met my husband, the man that I love so much?” So, now - how this online dating story started...
Back to motherland Russia - the beginning of my dating story Living in a place other than my country was never
on my mind until I traveled outside of the Soviet Union. The first time I got the opportunity to travel abroad was after the Soviet Union collapsed and Russian people got (a relative) freedom.
Actually, even after I had seen many different countries, I was happy to come back home and feel that I was among people who spoke the same language I did. I had a fairly comfortable life in the Soviet Union.
I had a good job, a good income, and surrounded by good friends, but one very important thing was missing in my life - a good relationship with a man who would be my best friend and my lover.
I had a few romances in the past, but I never had a soul mate, someone with whom I could have a deep understanding.
When I was 32, I realized that all the traveling to other countries literally broadened my horizons. Gradually, it made me realize that Russian men were not the only option for me.
It was my younger sister who actually talked me into using online dating services. Joining a dating service sounded like a fascinating idea. I read about some successful “Online dating stories”
and I decided to give it a chance.
